Top Five Writing Distractions: What are Yours?

I finally know what to write. The next scene or chapter came to me in a dream, driving or while pretending to listen to my date (yes I am a bastard). All i have to do is write it down.

But I don’t.

These are the usual reasons why.

5. TV

4. Family and Friends.

3. Blogging about Writing

2. Work

1. Personal lack of discipline.

I sure have it easy don’t I? No family to feed, no diapers to change, no school work to complete. What to do about this outrageously low levels of productivity?

Focus on number one.

On the days when we don’t feel like writing, when our muses flee from us like PT Cruisers from beauty and we have to deal with a thousand thousand  other things, only thing can make us write.

Personal Discipline.

But how do you find/improve personal discipline you ask? I am still searching for that particular answer (see large empty pizza box in front of TV for evidence). What I can say is this. On the days when i do manage to write when i absolutely don’t feel like it, it’s because i searched myself and asked if writing was absolutely totally necessary and a yes roaring back.

Yes, there will be days when even personal discipline doesn’t get a writer far. Our bosses poop a chicken, the kids act a fool, the Lakers are on TV, rejection letters are pouring in, we’re bone tired and we just don’t want to stare at the blank page.

Gotta try though.

What distracts you from writing?
